A Few Good Men
Are all I need to keep me happy, confident and satisfied – professionally, that is. I’m talking about my work as a project manager on building sites, where I’m constantly impressed with the men on the teams I get to work with; their reliability, humour, intelligence and know-how make coordinating everyone and planning the build a regular pleasure. It’s not just the sound of a drop saw in the morning that I love, it’s the banter, interaction and easy cooperation from the characters on the job that keep me involved and interested.
A love of interiors, design and building got me into the business, which took a back seat during the child-rearing years. I’m proud of my one daughter, now independent and safely off my hands, whose life experience, worldliness and community spirit are exemplary. I’ve been fortunate enough to have lived in London for work; I’m now grateful to be securely anchored and eager for the next chapter.
A settled, easy-going type, I also find pleasure in the oddball, the quirky and the unconventional. You’ve read it before, but I really do enjoy a country drive. It’s just that in my antique British sports car, that can be a gamble, as getting home again is never guaranteed! The customers who call in to the op-shop where I volunteer are a regular delight; I find some of the best and funniest conversations I have are in the shop. I still don’t know if the man who asked if a pair of shoes were available in a different size was joking or not.
The op-shoppers may come from everywhere, and my work colleagues in many hues of dependability, but there’s one more yet to come. The one who’ll have my back and who I’ll back, because a life shared between two is a life more than doubled.
